Rediscovering the role of attitudes, Part I
Have you ever questioned the greatest discovery of our generation? This quest might have never crossed your mind. That is fine. Take a moment and think about this question and have your answer ready. You are going to compare your answer with pioneering American psychologist and philosopher William James. He said, "The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes."
Since the discovery of this truth, some individuals and companies have been hugely and consciously investing to alter their’s and their people’s attitude for better performance and achievement. They are convinced that there is no short cut for sustainable progress or any other efficient way of life changing approach than making attitudinal change to win challenges, competitions, confrontations, limitations, and more.
Before victory or performance in sight, the precursor is the right and conquering attitude, without which success is not guaranteed.
By the way, this truth has not been new. Well before the 17th C, it was preached by the greatest of all teachers, our Lord Jesus Christ though Science (Psychology) discovered it in the 17th C. When we closely look at the attitude of Jesus and the Pharisees, there were lots of incorrect attitudes the latter had about God, the Truth, and more. That attitudinal gap caused bitterness in them and hated Him. They should have repented (changed their mind) and altered their destiny to inherit the eternal Kingdom but they didn’t want to repent and alter their attitude and you know the rest of the story.
Jesus knew that there was no other way to redeem humanity than first altering their thinking and thought process, which leads to repentance of past deeds. He was in the business of altering incorrect and failed religious attitudes. He was also altering the wrong priority of His followers so that they might live according to His Father’s Kingdom living style that takes attitudinal change as a prerequisite. The shifting of thinking and attitude was very critical to alter the position of His followers from the life of bondage, condemnation, and limitation to the life of freedom, redemption, and boundless living.
One can talk tough, download information from best sources, and even start to engage endless activities but in vain since it couldn’t alter his life for good until the change in attitude precedes these all. For that matter, altering one’s attitude and mind not only alter his life on earth but alter his eternal destiny. That was why John the Baptist and Jesus Himself, and His disciples where redirecting people to first repentance, which means a change of mind that leads to a change of conduct. Repentance was and is the gateway.
In science or business too, we could say, altering attitude is a rock bed of all changes and progresses. Our generation should even press the button a bit hard and reinforce William James' statement further to say that attitudinal change is the mother of all discoveries. There should not be much argument in rating it as the mother of all discoveries. With out the right attitude, one cannot alter status quos. Without having the right attitude, one cannot break through limitations and confrontations to come up with something new that benefit humanity. Without changing mind and attitude, one cannot enter to the unlimited options for further discoveries....
Regardless of our rating of attitude in this generation, there should be a consensus that attitude matters in one’s life either for good or bad. There is no neutral attitude per se; it is either good and beneficiary or bad and costly. Good attitudes don’t only change our inside; they have the capacity to alter the outside world. Note that having good attitude doesn’t mean that we are denying facts within and outside of ourselves. It doesn’t mean also escaping realities that are very apparent and staring at us vividly. It is soaring beyond realities and facts.
Good attitude is a contagious one that has a potential to alter circumstances and other people. Helen Keller’s attitude about the inability of disability to fulfill her destiny altered not only her own life. It brought a whole lot new perception about how insight is more important than sight. She rewrote history regardless of the really of blindness, which was apparent and scary. Her right attitude overridden the reality and impacted the world forever. That one right attitude transcended generations!
Friend, you are a good attitude away to override a reality that kept you at bay so long.
The challenge with all of us, however, is that we think we have the best and up-to-date attitudes. For that matter, who sleeps with a bad attitude for a day
We all think, in most cases, we are endowed with attitudes than any one else. This is human nature. Dale Carnegie, in his book "How to Win Friends & Influence People", said that ninety-nine percent people don't criticize themselves for anything, no matter how wrong it may be. Hey, this include those people convicted of murder ![]()
Carnegie shed light about this fact by sharing his conversation with New York's infamous Sing Sing prison warden Lewis Lawes about the attitude of prisoners. The latter said that most prisoners attempt by a form of reasoning, fallacious or logical, to justify their anti-social acts and they argue that they should never have been imprisoned at all. On the aforementioned book, the author depicted a manhunt story from May 7, 1931. The main actor was a cop killer Crowley, who was defiant when he arrived at the death electric chair. Rather than saying this is what I get for killing people, he said "This is what I get for defending myself."
We all have some degree of such defiant positions towards our attitude concerning a person, an issue, and/or a thing. God deliver us!!
The Bible is full of contrasting stories. There was a stark contrast between the attitude of Joshua and Caleb, and the other ten spies. While the formers had the attitude where they thought they were more than the reality and as conquerors, the latter ones had bad attitude about themselves and thought that they were just grasshoppers. Mind you, there was a reality that the people in the land were giants but while the two had an attitude of victors, the others saw themselves bowing down for the reality because of the inferior attitude they had in their mind. These two groups were from the same community, culture, upbringing, eating and drinking almost from the same source. The difference was attitude. Thus, the very first action to win such a war is not building army, holding a strategic position, or even ‘injecting insulin’ to make every one a giant
It should start from repentance, changing the attitude of defeat and inferiority. Once that attitudinal position is altered, then success would be inevitable.
In our generation, whether it is in corporate or politics, we have numerous examples where leaders, inventors, and investors showed positive attitude in the midst of challenging and desperate realities and changed depressive situations into celebrations. Many people, through the help of coaches and continuous self motivation, conquered poverty, disease, inferiority complex, depression, and more. While these people get embraced an attitude within them that had a potential to alter the situation regardless of its severity, there are many people in the other camp because of the attitude they have towards the reality within and out side of them which is rocking against their favor. The former ones have Albert Camus's mentality: "In the depth of winter," said Albert Camus, "I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer."
While the outside world is trembling and shaking, you are a discovery of something great in you away to enjoy life in its best....
Friends, we might be in the middle of frustrating situations and the reality is frightening. The world is in preparation to face the worst recession ever. We may be wondering whether we would see the sun tomorrow and appreciate its glory as we used to, whether we could be able to pay our bills for next month, whether we will be able to marry and get children, whether we will have our loved ones return safe from far away places, whether we get healed, the list could continue....
While the reality and the facts are still staring at our face and roaring, we have the control to see past them. We can soar beyond the situations and make them history as far as we have an overcoming attitude, faith in God, and His unlimited power deposited in our inner most being. Our right attitude could help us soar beyond the challenges and land safe in our glorious and colorful future. Don't die while you are attitudinal change away to enter your envious inheritance. Survive today by creating the right atmosphere within to see a better tomorrow...
